Thermo Fisher introduces Orbitrap Astral Zoom and Orbitrap Excedion Pro mass spectrometers

Thermo Fisher Scientific unveiled two Orbitrap-based mass spectrometers at ASMS 2025 in Baltimore, aimed at proteomics and biopharma characterisation.

June 2, 2025

Thermo Fisher Scientific announced two new mass spectrometers on 2 June 2025, to be unveiled at the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) conference held from 1 to 5 June 2025 in Baltimore, Maryland [1][2]. The performance figures below are the company's claims; the sources give no baseline for the percentages and no independent validation.

Orbitrap Astral Zoom MS

This instrument builds on the earlier Orbitrap Astral. Thermo Fisher claims 35% faster scan speeds, 40% higher throughput and 50% more multiplexing capability [1][2]. It is positioned for proteomics research, including biomarker discovery and precision oncology. Yu-Ju Chen of Academia Sinica is quoted in the release saying it will be a paradigm shift for proteomics technology [1][2].

Orbitrap Excedion Pro MS

Thermo Fisher describes this as the first platform to combine next-generation Orbitrap hybrid mass spectrometry with alternative fragmentation technologies [1][2]. It is aimed at characterising biotherapeutics such as monoclonal antibodies, with claimed gains in sensitivity, dynamic range and reliability, and it provides protein, post-translational modification and small-molecule data [1][2].

Related offering

At the same conference, the company also featured Olink affinity-based proteomics as a complement to Orbitrap-based mass spectrometry [1][2].

Availability

The release uses the word launch but, in the pages we read, gives no shipping date, pricing or regional availability [1]. Indian laboratories interested in these systems can contact the Agarwal Brothers team, who will ask the principal for current details.
